Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that more than 250,000 enslaved people were free. This coming more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder of the harm caused when people are denied access to accurate information and truth. For more than two years, enslaved Texans remained in bondage because their freedom was withheld from them by those who benefited from their oppression.
